September: The Wisdom of Beginning Again
September carries a quiet invitation to begin again. Not necessarily because something went wrong, but because life is constantly giving us opportunities to reassess, realign, and grow. As the seasons begin to change, we are reminded that transformation is a natural part of life. Nature does not resist its cycles. There is a time to bloom, a time to grow, a time to release, and a time to become something new. We can learn from that rhythm.
A new season gives us an opportunity to look at our lives with fresh eyes. Where are we now? What have our experiences taught us? What are we ready to do differently? What kind of person are we becoming? These are important questions because growth is not simply about changing our circumstances. It is also about changing the way we move through life.
Within Ifa, spirituality is deeply connected to the way we live. Our spiritual development cannot be separated from our character, our choices, our relationships, or the way we treat others. One of the important concepts within Yoruba philosophy is Iwa which speaks to character and one's way of being. We can gain knowledge, pursue success, and seek spiritual understanding, but the character we develop determines how we carry all of those things.
Character is not only revealed when life is going well. It becomes even more visible when we are challenged. How do we respond when we are disappointed? How do we treat people when we have nothing to gain from them? How do we handle responsibility, conflict, success, and adversity? These moments reveal parts of ourselves that we may not otherwise see. Developing good character requires us to continually examine ourselves and be willing to grow.
September can therefore be a time to consider more than what we want to accomplish. It can be a time to consider who we are while pursuing those accomplishments. Sometimes we become so focused on reaching the next destination that we forget the importance of the person we are becoming along the way.
Beginning again can sometimes feel like failure. We may look at a relationship, career, business, goal, or chapter of our lives that did not unfold as expected and wonder what went wrong. We may believe that changing direction means we have wasted time. But beginning again does not always mean starting over. Sometimes it means starting from wisdom.
We are not the same people we were when we made our previous decisions. Life has taught us things. Experiences have revealed things. Difficult seasons have developed parts of us that comfort never could. We have learned what we value, what we will no longer tolerate, what we desire, and what we need to change. That knowledge becomes part of our foundation. A new beginning built upon wisdom is not the same as beginning from nothing.
There is also wisdom in learning to pause before moving forward. We live in a world that often encourages constant movement. We are told to keep going, keep producing, keep achieving, and keep pushing. Yet there are times when the most powerful thing we can do is become still enough to listen.
Listening is an important part of spiritual development. Before making the next decision, listen. Before reacting, listen. Before forcing an outcome, listen. Before assuming you already know what comes next, listen. Our relationship with Ori reminds us of the importance of consciousness, self-awareness, and alignment. There will be seasons when the path ahead is not immediately clear, and uncertainty does not necessarily mean that we have lost our way. Sometimes clarity requires stillness.
As we enter September, we can also ask ourselves what we are building. What are we building within ourselves? What kind of relationships are we creating? What kind of character are we developing? What kind of legacy are we leaving? What are we teaching the people who observe our lives through the way we live?
These questions move us beyond simply surviving one season after another. They encourage us to become intentional participants in our own development. Our lives are being shaped by our decisions every day, whether we recognize it or not. The small choices we make repeatedly eventually become habits, and those habits influence the person we become.
It is also important to remember that growth does not happen according to a universal timeline. One person may be building while another is healing. One may be learning while another is teaching. One may be beginning while another is completing. Comparing our journey to someone else's can cause us to overlook the significance of our own path.
Your journey deserves your attention. There are lessons that belong specifically to you. There are experiences that have shaped you in ways others may never understand. There are things you will learn only by walking your own path. Growth should not be measured solely by how quickly we arrive somewhere, but by how deeply we understand what the journey is teaching us.
September does not require perfection. It offers possibility. It gives us another opportunity to make a different choice, strengthen our character, deepen our spiritual understanding, repair what can be repaired, release what has completed its purpose, and move forward with greater awareness.
Transformation is not always loud. Sometimes it happens quietly. Sometimes it begins with a decision no one else sees. Sometimes it begins with recognizing that the way we have been living no longer reflects the person we desire to become. Sometimes transformation begins with simply deciding that we are ready to move differently.
As this new season unfolds, may we become more intentional about the lives we are creating. May we have the courage to examine ourselves honestly, the discipline to develop our character, and the wisdom to recognize when it is time to grow beyond an old version of ourselves. May we learn to listen more deeply to our Ori and trust the wisdom that comes through self-awareness, spiritual development, and experience.
September reminds us that beginning again is not something to fear. Life itself is constantly beginning again. Each season teaches us something about change, patience, release, and renewal. We are allowed to change. We are allowed to learn. We are allowed to take a different direction. We are allowed to become.
May this month bring clarity, wisdom, discipline, peace, and the courage to honor the path before us. May our Ori guide us toward what is aligned, may our character remain strong as we grow, and may the wisdom of Ifa continue to remind us that spiritual development is not merely something we study—it is something we live.
A new season is here. May we have the wisdom to recognize what it is asking us to become.
